Skeletal Nickel Catalysts (Raney Nickel)
High-surface-area porous Ni catalyst prepared by selective leaching of Al
from Ni–Al alloy using concentrated alkali. Surface area up to 100 m²/g with large pore volume.
Applications: Hydrogenation of nitriles, aldehydes, ketones, nitro compounds, and unsaturated
hydrocarbons; hydrogenolysis of protective groups; edible oil hardening.
Chemical Information: Active metallic Ni surface atoms are exposed within a sponge-like structure.
Pyrophoric in dry state; typically handled as aqueous suspension. Catalytic activity strongly
depends on residual Al content and degree of activation.

- General Formula: Ni(Al) (porous metallic nickel with residual Al).
- Preparation: Ni–Al alloy (e.g., Ni:Al = 1:1 or 1:2) leached with concentrated NaOH → porous Ni.
- Surface Area: 50–100 m²/g.
- Pore Size: Mesoporous structure.
- Key Property: Highly reactive metallic Ni surface atoms; pyrophoric when dry.
